On April 12-13 Write4Life ran its inaugural creative writing workshop with Year Beyond and Chrysalis Academy on the edge of the beautiful Tokai forest in Cape Town.

What began as seventeen strangers gathering with notebooks quickly transformed into a community of storytellers. Participants dived into imagery exercises, played with language, and crafted poems drawn from their own lived experiences. Through freewriting sessions with prompts like “I remember…” writers broke through barriers they never knew existed.

As character sketches and vivid descriptions of place emerged, so too did something deeper—confidence. By the workshop’s end, not only had participants created impressive creative non-fiction pieces, but they’d formed genuine friendships forged through shared vulnerability and creative discovery.

The journey isn’t over—all workshop writing will be polished and published in an anthology launching this June.

Here’s what some participants had to say:

“I’ve always written my vulnerable stories in secret, afraid my voice wasn’t worth hearing. But I am ready to speak louder now.”

“I enjoyed writing my own stories without being judged.”

“Strangers became mirrors. We listened to each other, nodded at each other’s stories, and whispered “me too” whenever we related to something. That kind of trust is rare and precious.”

“Now I know what my potential as a writer is.”

“Now I am aware of what a good writer I am in both isiXhosa and English. I didn’t know I could mix the two languages in one piece without struggling.”

“Freewriting made me feel calm relaxed and reconnected with my younger self.”

“I am a critical and analytical thinker. I had to step out of my comfort zone and be uncomfortably comfortable with making ‘mistakes’ using different languages to tell stories and convey important parts.

“I have developed through getting the courage to express myself.”
